Description
Xanthan gum is a sugar-based polymer produced by bacteria commonly used as a thickening or stabilizing agent in food or beauty products. Xanthan Gum is derived from glucose or corn syrup. Xanthan gum has the ability to notably increase the viscosity of liquids it is added to for optimal texture. Similarly, it has the ability to bind other skin ingredients together, as well as being used in oil-and-water emulsions to keep the two phases separate. It is used in a wide variety of cosmetics and personal care products including bath products, makeup, skin and hair care products, and toothpaste.
In cosmetics and personal care products, xanthan gum functions as a binder, emulsion stabilizer, surfactant-emulsifying agent, and a viscosity increasing agent. As the name implies, as a binder, xanthan gum functions to prevent other ingredients used in a cosmetic formulation from coming apart. It is commonly used in moisturizers, Lotions, Facial Cleansers, Creams, Body Washes, Foundation, as a
- Stabilizing
- Thickening
- Binding
- Creates a creamy texture
It is not known to have any toxic or harmful side effects, can be appropriate for use in natural and organic skincare and it has some hydrating benefits for the skin. Unlike some gums, xanthan gum is stable under a wide range of temperatures and varying pH environments. Some people may find that they suffer allergies to xanthan gum based upon its origins in corn, wheat, dairy and soy, although symptoms are thought to occur only after xanthan gum is ingested, rather than topically applied.
