Description

Our Natural Sodium Phytate is a 100% natural chelating agent, which helps bind free metal ions in formulas to stabilize and improve the shelf life of skin care products.  Sodium Phytate is the sodium salt of Phytic acid, a saturated cyclic acid.  Phytic Acid is found abundantly in plant tissues, especially bran and seeds, where it acts as the principal storage form of phosphorus.

Sodium Phytate is an all-natural chelating agent that is fully neutralized and has a pH of ~12. It serves as a natural alternative to disodium and tetrasodium EDTA in cosmetic products.

Chelators help to prevent undesirable metal-catalyzed reactions, thereby stabilizing cosmetic products. They help with discoloration and rancidity caused by metals present in formulations and works synergistically with other antioxidants.

Chelating agents are commonly added to cosmetic formulations to act as a preservative booster. Micro organisms need trace metals for cell wall maintenance and survival. Chelators bind with these metals, making them unavailable to bacteria, thereby weakening bacteria and allowing cosmetic preservatives to work more efficiently.

Chelators catalyzes metal ions, which can be introduced into a cosmetic formulation from production equipment, as impurities from ingredients (e.g. extracts, pigments) and from introduction of water.

These metal ions can react with formulation ingredients causing problems, including:  Spoilage, rancidity, degradation of vitamins and essential fatty acids, Fragrance degradation, discoloration, Haze formation, precipitation, and impair the foaming properties of surfactants and rinsability performance.

Chelators works synergistically with your preservative to improve preservative efficacy.

Country of Origin: USA

Purity: 100% min.

INCI: Sodium Phytate

Color: White powder or crystals

Solubility: Water

PH: 12 (1% in water):  9 – 12

Manufacturer suggested Usage :0.05 – 0.5%. Chelating agents should be added to the water phase of formulations early in the formulating process so product degradation can be prevented before it begins. Not heat sensitive, can be added to water phase prior to heating.

Common Uses/Benefits

Sodium Phytate is used in combination with typical antioxidants (tocopherol, ascobyl palmitate) in all types of formulations that are susceptible for oxidation reactions to protect valuable ingredients like unsaturated oils or fragrance components. In rinse-off products Sodium Phytate is used to maintain the foaming properties in the presence of hard water or to prevent precipitation of insoluble salts of fatty acids in soaps. At concentrations over 0.5%, sodium phytate is an effective lightener of discoloration and age spots. it stimulates the naturally occurring exfoliation of hyperpigmented cells on the skin’s surface and reduces melanin synthesis in newly emerging epidermis cells (through the inhibition of the tyrosinase enzyme activity).
