Description
Liquorice (Licorice) Root is a herbaceous perennial native to Europe and parts of Asia. Liquorice extract has been used in ancient Chinese remedies to treat all sorts of skin concerns since the early 1990s. The skin whitening compound ‘Glabridin’ protects the skin by absorbing harmful UV rays. Liquorice extract has anti-inflammatory properties that help to calm the skin and brighten it.
Liquorice Root is said to have amazing soothing properties and the extract can be used for topical applications. It is used in skin care formulations to soothe and relax dry and tired skin. It contains powerful antioxidants that can neutralize free radicals from external environmental (sun, pollution) and internal (e.g., energy production) stressors.
Hyperpigmentation or dark spots can be common after an acne breakout, an eczema flare or a sunburn. Licorice root extract is a common ingredient used in many skincare products to lighten these discolorations or pigmentations.
Licorice root typically contains glycyrrhizin which is a potassium or calcium salt of glycyrrhizinic acid. Glycyrrhizin (Glycyrrhizinic acid) is an extremely sweet glycoside that foams in water. It is said to be 50 to 200 times sweeter than sugar, hence the sweet taste associated with licorice root. Glycyrrhizinic acid is a glycoside of a pentacyclic triterpene carboxylic acid, and it functions as a whitener, which may gently lighten the skin. As a cosmeceutical, licorice also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, which can help sooth irritated inflamed epithelium. Frequently added to cleansers, toners, clarifiers and serums.
