Deionized Water  – Cosmetic Grade Purified Water

Deionized Water is ultra-purified water that has had nearly all of its mineral ions removed, making it laboratory-grade in purity and ideal for professional cosmetic formulation.

While both distilled water and deionized water are considered purified, deionized water undergoes a more advanced purification process, resulting in significantly lower conductivity and minimal ionic contamination. This higher level of purity makes it especially suitable for sensitive formulations and active-rich systems.

In cosmetic manufacturing, purity is not optional,  it is foundational. Using high-grade water reduces the risk of instability, unwanted reactions with actives, and contamination that can compromise product performance.

How Deionized Water Is Produced

Deionized water is created by passing water through ion-exchange resins (specialized beads) that:

• Remove positively and negatively charged mineral ions (such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, and sulfates)

• Replace them with hydrogen (H⁺) and hydroxyl (OH⁻) ions

• Recombine to form highly purified H₂O

The result is water that is free from dissolved salts and has extremely low electrical conductivity, making it suitable for high-performance formulations.

Water quality directly impacts formulation stability. When working with pH-sensitive actives like Vitamin C, AHAs, Kojic Acid, or Tranexamic Acid, mineral contamination from lower-grade water can alter performance and reduce efficacy.

For professional formulations, always use high-purity water and combine it with an appropriate preservative system for microbial protection.

Remember: Deionized water improves chemical purity,  it does not replace preservatives.
