Commonly called “Vitamin B5”, “ProVitamin B5” or “Pantothenic Acid”, 100% panthenol is an additive no hair care / skin care product should be without. It’s strengthening properties are well-known and widely used in professional hair care formulations where it also provides lustre to the hair. It is also well known for its anti-inflammatory properties in professional skin care formulations where it also act as a humectant and blemish reducer.

Panthenol is a member of the B-complex vitamin group present in hair and skin, it acts as a humectant stabilizing the skin barrier function, reducing the risk of dehydration by increasing water absorption. To get the full benefits of Panthenol, it needs to be used over a period of time. By applying Panthenol in skin care formulation, you will not only increase its hydration but improve its softness and elasticity. Panthanol is a great additive for the treatment of dry, scaly, or rough skin, with consistent use, you will see a noticeable difference.

Panthenol also repairs and strengthens damaged hair, reduces split ends, and increases tensile strength. The effects on damaged hair are due to its penetrating and coating action on the hair shaft. Panthenol is able to selectively deposit  on the damaged areas of the hair where it is most needed, this evidence of  it’s effects on damaged hair is well documented.

In leave-on hair products, it imparts sheen, luster and manageability while leaving the hair looking full and natural without oiliness or stickiness.

D-Panthenol and DL-Panthenol are often used interchangeably, however,  there’s a slight difference.

The difference is simply that only ‘D-Panthenol’ is biologically fully active, however both forms have moisturizing properties. This means that D-Panthenol is what is converted to Vitamin B5 and not the L-Panthenol. When DL-Panthenol  is absorbed into the skin layers, only the “D” component is converted into vitamin B5. Meanwhile, the “L” component  is not absorbed as easily, though the L portion still holds moisture benefits to the skin, they aren’t easily absorbed. So technically, DL-Panthenol has only half of the physiological activity of D-Panthenol in skin care. DL-Panthenol is a mixture of D-Panthenol and L-Panthenol and has only 50% active Panthenol, they both typically provide the same moisturization, hair texture improvement and sheen.For skincare, biologically fully active D-Panthenol is preferred whereas on hair it doesn’t matter (since hair is dead). DL-Panthenol is preferred in hair formulations simply because it is more economical.
