Description
Carrageenan (Irish Moss) belongs to the red seaweed family and grows on the North Atlantic coast, similar to other seaweeds, it is of high nutritive value, it is rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and carbohydrates.
Carrageenan (Irish Moss) is a seaweed gum used in cosmetics as a gelling, emulsifying, thickening & stabilizing agent with excellent water-binding properties. It is considered as a marine biopolymers as it can swell up to 1000 times in the water.
It is widely used in the food and cosmetic industries for its thickening and stabilizing properties. It has been used for centuries in the food industry to form jellies as an alternative to gelatin.
Carrageenan (Irish Moss), is an isolated natural polysaccharide extracted from red seaweed, also known as Chondrus crispus, typically found growing on the underside of rocks, that are submerged in water. Our Carrageenan (Irish Moss) is Kosher certified and offers the vegetarian, or vegan, a suitable alternative to gelatin.
There are several types of Carrageenan, each having different rheological (Thickening) properties. It comes in three main forms iota, kappa, and lambda carrageenan. Each form has some specific combination in forming a gel or exhibiting rheology.
Our Carrageenan is a Calcium Iota type, which offers better electrolyte tolerance and elastic gelling properties.
Carrageenan (Irish Moss) is a proven, and easy to use, emulsion stabilizer, and rheology modifier, where it provides a more mobile, fluid, behavior to creams and lotions.
Carrageenan (Irish Moss) is pseudoplastic (thins when shear force is applied and then re-thickens as soon as the shear force is removed), offering the ability to develop thick creams that can, easily, be packaged in bottles.
Carrageenan is also a water-binding agent, which means it helps hold water onto the skin and hair, increasing hydration, hence it’s popularity in high-end, natural moisturizers, shampoos, conditioners.
Obtained From: whole plant
INCI: Chondrus crispus – KOSHER
Appearance: Free flowing off white powder Powder
Solubility: Water (Max. Hydration at 77C, or after 24 Hours)
Charge: Anionic
Manufacturer Suggested Usage: 0.1-7% to water phase. Incorporate with high shear mixing, can be heated up to 77C. Full viscosity takes up to 24 hours. Do not use in combination with chelating agents which may interfere with the structure formation. note: Heat will cause Carrageenan (Irish Moss) gels to thin, but they will recover as soon as temperature returns to normal.
Common Uses /Benefits
Carrageenan (Irish Moss) is primarily used as a a gelling, thickening, emulsifying & stabilizing agent. Add carrageenan to something and you improve the texture and help the ingredients mix together more smoothly.

It is widely used in high end hair care products as a film former around the hair shaft and works as a hair conditioner. The beauty of Carrageenan is its ability to replenish the skin with its minerals, vitamins and antioxidants while acting as a rheology modifier.
The carbohydrate content in carrageenan draws moisture and makes it available for the skin. Carrageenan (Irish Moss) acts as a moisturizer, emulsifier and stabilizer all at the same time!
When used in hair care gels, Carrageenan (Irish Moss) offers the added advantage of smoothness and curl activation with repeated application, gels will not, and would typically, build up and cause flaking.
Carrageenan (Irish Moss) forms a perfect synergy with the Lactylates where it improves the stability and emulsification capability.
