Description

Caprylic Capric triglyceride is a group of naturally-derived fatty acids that have been used as emollients in cosmetic formulations for over 50 years. Emollients have exceptional skin moisturizing properties by creating a barrier between our skin and the environment, allowing the retention of water and moisture on the skin. In addition to being used as an emollient, caprylic capric triglyceride may also be used as a solvent in cosmetic formulation in order to dissolve oil-soluble extracts, actives and vitamins.

Caprylic Capric Triglycerides is often mistaken for  Fractionated Coconut Oil.

Capric and caprylic acids are saturated fatty acids naturally present in coconut and palm oil. They are considered to be medium-chain fatty acids. To manufacture Caprylic Capric Triglycerides, Capric and caprylic fatty acids are separated from the glycerine compound and the other fatty acids present in the coconut or palm oil. This is usually achieved by steam hydrolysis to break apart the structure of the oil. The capric & caprylic acids isolated are then combined together with the glycerine compound by a process called ‘esterification’ to remove residual fatty acids resulting in the pure ester,  ‘capric caprylic triglyceride’. This new ingredient has different physical properties than the original oil it came from. The result of this process is a product with superior oxidative stability with a silky feel that is a great choice for sensitive skin and oil free applications.

Fractionated coconut oil on the hand, is created by melting coconut oil and removing the harder saturated fatty acids as it gently cools back down. Leaving the liquid portion of the coconut oil which consists of the less saturated fatty acids. Fractionated coconut oil is created using a simple physical process of heating and cooling down while Caprylic capric triglycerides is produced using a more complex  production process.

Caprylic capric triglycerides are a specialized esterification of coconut oil using just the caprylic and capric fatty acids, while fractionated coconut oil is a, standard, distillation of coconut oil which results in a combination of all of the fatty acids, pulled through the distillation process. Caprylic Capric Triglycerides are produced by the esterification of glycerol (plant sugars) with mixtures of caprylic (C:8) and capric (C:10) fatty acids from coconut or palm kernel oils.

While fractionated Coconut Oil has the same performance as  heat pressed and cold pressed coconut oils but with a lighter, silkier feel and more stability, Caprylic Capric Triglycerides on the other hand has the lightest, silkiest feel, is more stable, and has a longer shelf life than fractionated coconut oil.

Caprylic Capric Triglycerides,  does not feel like regular carrier oils. Caprylic Capric Triglycerides is an ester and has a very light, silky feel that is not greasy and does not leave an oily feeling on the skin.

The difference between the two products is easy to miss as they both have the same INCI name, however, the two are not interchangeable. The primary difference is, unlike caprylic capric triglyceride, which only focuses on the caprylic and capric fatty acids, fractionated coconut oil combines all of the fatty acid compounds naturally occurring in coconut oil.

In addition to the chemical composition difference, there is a significant difference in the physical properties between caprylic capric triglyceride and fractionated coconut oil. Fractionated coconut oil is similar to carrier oils, though the texture is slightly ‘lighter’ than many other carrier oils. On the other hand, caprylic capric triglyceride is known to have a  far more silky, dry,  almost powdery feel, which contributes to their wide-ranging use in the cosmetic and skincare industries. Caprylic Capric Triglycerides is also a more suitable oil replacement for emulsifiers that are intolerant of carrier oils, whereas  fractionated coconut oil may not be. It Provides a substitute for carrier oils, for oily skin, for sensitive skin, or when you need an oil free product.

Common Uses/ Benefits

Caprylic Capric Triglycerides  offers a noticeable silkiness in products, low viscosity,  and excellent anti-oxidant properties to extend the natural shelf life of products. They also offer skin nurturing benefits due to the skin loving nature of the specific fatty acid esters, not seen with common fractionated coconut oil, or other carrier oils, and they are especially suited to sensitive skin and oily skin.

Caprylic Capric Triglyceride are efficient solvents and therefore, act as carriers for fat-soluble vitamins and actives. Their emollient properties enable Caprylic Capric Triglycerides to improve the esthetics of topical products while functioning as a component of the delivery system. Caprylic Capric Triglycerides may also be used to help solubilize actives that are not readily soluble in traditional carrier oils.

Caprylic capric triglyceride are potent antioxidants, which can help prevent oxidative damage to the skin. In addition to the skin benefits, caprylic capric triglyceride also extends the shelf life of skincare products beyond what carrier oil alternatives can sustain. Caprylic capric triglyceride is an amazing plant-based alternative to synthetically-derived emollients and provides many beneficial properties due to their high fatty acid and antioxidant concentrations.
