Azelaic acid is known to work on skin as a gentle exfoliant, it helps to unclog pores and refine skin’s surface. Azelaic acid also significantly reduces the factors that lead to skin sensitivity and has antioxidant benefits. It is naturally found in grains like barley, wheat, and rye, however, the synthetic form is typically used in skincare products because of its stability and effectiveness.
Research shows that azelaic acid can significantly diminish the appearance of skin blemishes, fade acne marks and other discolorations, refine skin’s surface, and reveal a more even skin tone. It is also compatible with all skin types as it reduces sensitivity.
Azelaic acid can exfoliate skin when properly formulated, it doesn’t exfoliate the same way or with the same level of effectiveness as ingredients like glycolic acid, lactic acid (AHAs) or salicylic acid (BHAs). However, azelaic acid offers benefits like markedly improvement in uneven skin tone and treating certain skin conditions that AHAs and BHAs ingredients don’t provide.
It may be used in combination with AHAs or BHAs exfoliant for addressing multiple skin concerns, from rosacea, acne, to uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation.

Azelaic acid is used in body care products to clear pores of bacteria that may lead to irritation or breakouts. It is known to reduce inflammation so acne becomes less visible, less red, and less irritated. It acts as a gently exfoliant, encouraging cell turnover so skin heals faster and scarring is minimized Azelaic acid can be used in rince of products like cleansers or toners or leave-on products like creams, gels and serums.
Caution: Azelaic acid is nontoxic and is generally well-tolerated, those with sensitive skin may experience mild irritation and redness especially at higher concentrations.
