Description

Arrowroot starch (also called arrowroot powder) is a powdery product extracted from the roots of the arrowroot plant (Maranta Arundinaceae). The powder contains primarily various starch components (e.g. amylose), proteins, and various minerals including sodium, potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium, and zinc. Arrowroot is similar to cornstarch, but it is finer and more absorbent, making it better suited for beauty applications.  Cornstarch is made from corn, which is almost always genetically modified.  The Arrow root plant isn’t genetically modified.

The  roots of the arrowroot plant (Maranta arundinaceae)  are washed and the scales are removed to avoid any disagreeable flavor. The roots are then crushed in mortars resulting in a milky liquid which is passed through a coarse cloth. The insoluble, pure starch is allowed to settle at the bottom and is further dried resulting in a fine powder.

Common Uses/ Benefits:

Arrow root in anhydrous products helps to reduce the greasy/oily skin feel, and in higher concentrations it can give the entire product a powdery, dry-touch finish and contribute to thickening. In powdered cosmetics it acts as a diluent and improves slip. Arrow Root is an excellent  filler with thickening properties useful for skin and hair care products. It has great moisture-absorbing and slight deodorant qualities. Makes skin feel silkier, softer and smoother. It has anti-irritant and non-allergenic properties (does not have antimicrobial properties), It can replace talc in formulas, It is often used as thickener in hair dye products. It is used in body powders, makeup powders, baby powder, deodorants, athlete’s foot products, anti-irritant skin care products, creams, lotions, eye cosmetics, hair care products.

Because arrowroot powder is absorbent, it is often used in lotions and body powders for wet rashes.  It can absorb liquid  from the skin. Arrowroot powder is often used to absorb moisture on the feet.  It doesn’t have any antifungal properties, so it’s used for moisture only. it’s a great addition to cosmetics  especially for oily skin, because it can absorb oil and dry out blemishes.
